Technical Review of Solor System Operation
Solar panels act like tiny electricity factories, continuously generating power from the sun's energy. These solar panels continuously produce clean, renewable energy any from sunlight.
- Solar panels work by converting sunlight into electricity through a process called photovoltaic effect.
- Solar panels are made up of many photovoltaic cells.
- When sunlight hits these cells, it knocks electrons loose from their atoms creating an electric field within the cell. This electric field pushes the electrons in a one direction creating direct current (DC) energy, like the battery in your automobile.
- An inverter is used to convert this direct current (DC) into alternating current (AC) as is used in most homes.
- Power is provided to the home during periods of sunlight with any excess energy being returned to the utility provider. Solar panels do NOT produce any power at night.
- A typical installation will be designed to produce enough power during daylight hours to offset that which would be used at night. This is why review of electricity usage is required in the design of system.
- If desired, batteries can be added which will power the home during periods of darkness and/or power grid failures.
